gophilipgo: you are quite correct. The standard measure of of a country's indebtedness is the ratio of external debt to GDP. So the US is clearly not the most indebted nation; however, I find that fact very cold comfort. It does not make me feel one ounce better that the US ranks 20th - out of the 75 largest economies - in indebtedness. Nor do I find it acceptable that US indebtedeness is only a bit greater than the average indebtedness of the top 75 economies.
