Cleburne boy dies after tug-of-war game in Granbury detention center

Police are investigating how and why an apparent game of tug-of-war at a detention center in Granbury last week led to the death of a 14-year-old Cleburne boy.

Granbury police Capt. Alan Hines said investigators have learned that detainees at the Granbury Regional Juvenile Justice Center at 1300 Crossland Road sometimes fight boredom by placing their bed sheets under the doors of their cells and engaging in tug-of-war battles with those in other cells.

He said Jordan Adams and another unnamed detainee in a separate cell were apparently playing the game on Oct. 10 when Jordan wrapped the sheet around his neck and the other detainee pulled, causing Jordan to lose consciousness. Hines said Jordan was apparently alone in his cell when the incident occurred.

Jordan was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth where he was pronounced dead Sunday at 7:22 p.m., after apparently never having regained consciousness.

"Our investigators have been interviewing people for the last week trying to figure out if we can put some kind of rhyme or reason to it and how it all went down," Hines said. "Right now, we're either looking at a criminal incident or accident."

Suicide does not, at this time, appear to be an option, Hines said, but added that could change.

Hines said it remains under investigation whether the other detainee could see that Jordan had placed the sheet around his neck. He said the facility has video cameras but not inside the cells.
