#28432 RE: BOOYAHH! #28427

Your assertion is 100% true.

Whatever the quality the silk produced by the modified silkworms reaches, it will not be spider-silk.

The silk expressed by these silkworms will be assembled using the spinnerets of a silkworm, not those of a spider.

No matter what the quality of the protein being spun is, it's conversion from protein to silk will be accomplished by a silkworms spinnerets.

I would suspect that the strength characteristics of the modified silkworm's silk will not reach the full potential of what the introduced spider protein may be capable of producing because the silk created by silkworms has a different use than the silk produced by spiders.

Without actually introducing the spinnerets associated with the new proteins being used it is not possible to create spider-silk per se.

That having been said, The newly created silks produced by Kraig's techniques should be better than silkworm silk for use in the textiles industry.

These same techniques should also be able of creating new fibers with qualities never seen before, with uses we have all been speculating about for months.

Calling it SPIDERSILK is really a poor description but it does grab attention.
