That may actually happen the way you see things. I just disagree with it in this case. The 'reinvent the wheel' you speak of IS the essence of progress. The easiest [and cheapest] answer is to buy the patents [as NEOM has done to some extent]. No reason MSFT, GOOG, others can't do same. In fact MSFT actually bought DOS and re-marketed it - at a HUGE profit. If you research the issue I think you will find that most patents are actually bought by someone else for better marketing/exploitation of the patents. I have no actual PROOF of that other than just my memory in doing the limited digging and rooting around - just conjecture.
