hi bw...what i felt the reason for templeton's pop was hong kong..europe didn't move..so that stabilized the increase the hang seng had the other day when it was up over 200 pts..that's what i have found is that templeton foreign invests mostly in hong kong..and when europe goes down a lot ..templeton's loss isn't as much as some of the others i have..i can't short either..i wait for the extreme oversold..don sew's i use for that..but i don't wait for it either..otherwise i would not do as good...it helps to know if your fund follows mostly the ftse/dax/cac/hong kong/japan...the ftse follows nasdaq most of the time..so i do use the nasdaq a lot to decide too..but if the dow goes down or up it can drag the nasdaq with it..mainly i just try to find the pattern for the trend..it does change..i do try to get a feeling of their top 10 holdings..and what sectors they may also be investing in..so even if i don't switch that day..i will always know what it did and to read up on the foreign news or listen to cnbc foreign markets to know what sectors lead that day..that helps also to know if they (the fund) is oversold..but oversold is the way i play this bear market..in the bull market..you know the pullback would be bought..so the pattern was easier to follow..ie; if dow was +40/50 i would go into the fund...i don't worry about not getting every rally..the important thing is to get your quota for that month if possible..then i just wait for the better opportunity for the best pop..and let the rest go...mainly due to this bear market..

it's funny you said you told people at work about what you do and how no one jumps on this..i agree..i did the same to people i know...even tried to mention it to traders..but no one seems to try to get it....this is even perfect for someone who is at home with kids or retired...or can just stick near the end of the day to see how things are going in the market to decide..i had been helping people too..and showed them how to do it...but then they started depending on my calls which thru me off in my deciding..i don't mind saying what i think will happen...but i don't want to feel responsible for someone's switching..and also sometimes i'll change my mind the last minute..literally...

regarding concluding the templeton foreigh whenever the compx has a 1% or better rise..i'll monitor that..i was finding that tempeton foreign was too conservative for me..i got better pops with trowe international and putnam international..i don't have too many options in our defer..templeton i found was good for hong kong plays..they have japan..but hong kong is big there...what other funds do you have in international that you follow?...you can email me at tradermama@yahoo.com so we don't litter the thread with this talk...it may not be of interest to anyone else...i would love to see someone start a thread on this ..sharing info on what the patterns we follow..

..one could open up a variable annuity..and get safer/better returns ..all you need is 5k and va's are unlimited switching with no penalities for the switch the last time i checked....the only drawback is you do have to wait till you are 59 1/2 to take it out and you have to keep it in for 7 yrs or you get a prorated penalty...jack white has them just like other brokerages..of course a va is a retirement tool...but to me..it's less stressful than trading..especially in this market
