This may not be very accurate but a possible scenario...

If the MM's continue to cover these shares as the price goes up and up, it would cost them a fortune. If they can run it up and down for a few days and make a crapload of money first, they can use that money to fund most of their covers.

Now that people are nervous and dumping shares into their hands means that there will be less shares to cover when time runs out. They can use the crapload of money they made to pay for shares when they are forced to buy at the ask...
