Itanium was to be released at only 600MHz. Here is a story from 1999 by the Register that states that HP had 800MHz as the original target, but that current samples barely make 400MHz:

How can anyone be so frigging clueless. The Merced was
released in *2001*. Why don't you dredge up old reports
of how fast the first Opteron engineering samples ran. It
was reportedly less than half the 1.8 GHz at release.

Oh the original target wasn't 1GHz. Yeah right!

Yeah I guess to *you* thereg is a reliable source. OTOH
the June 22, 1998 Microprocessor Report article about
Merced mentions expectations of 800 MHz for the device.

Montecito's are now down to 1.6-1.8GHz.

LOL, I'll be happy to remind you of your prediction in
about six months.
