aleph0, He occasionally gets a Xeon customer wanting a 19" server.Ca. 1 in 3 of them turn to Opteron after taking his advice...but the other 2 want to stay with Xeon.

Yes, that´s pretty much representative of the latest surveys I´ve
seen, although the number for customers that would not consider Opteron *regardless* of advantages is often closer to 75% in those surveys. That´s just the reality of the server market, and AMD will
need to work *really* hard to try and change this for the better.

No I don't. And I agree with you that AMD needs to support them better. There are some signs that they will, support is a lot better than it used to be. Every once in a while they produce printed material and make it available, but it is sporatic.
