We have about a 16 hour drive, but would like to explore Colorado Springs, the Gourge, etc., on the way there or back. Our first time to the area.
I love the mountains, especially since we are from the Mississippi River valley in eastern Iowa. The higher elevation would be great especially during the hot and humid summer.

How about a scenic railroad trip?

The Durango to Silverton narrow gauge is supposed to be one of the most beautiful trips in the U.S.
