What I don't understand is how someone that is smart enough to get where he is, is so stupid as to make such a statement.

If his speech writers penned it for him, did he not read it first?

How did he think it would be interpreted? Or did he simply not think?

I don't believe this should end his political career, but it is certainly the beginning of the end.

This is perfect... I just voted yes and am about to email the site to the mass mailing I received with the PFAW site... pfaw pfaw... (People for the American Way) calling for Lott's resignation.

I cannot believe the flap this caused. It was a stupid comment, but I took it as a suck up statement meant to make an old man feel good on his 100th birthday. Hell, Thurmond's biggest claim to legislative fame was a 25-hour filibuster. Sheesh.

The Democrats are grasping at straws.
