They use social responsibility as a PR tool. If it works out, company will generate more sales, offsetting the cost of the campaign. People feel better about spending money, if they also support a good cause.

Indeed, they are just giving our money away. Maybe it's for publicity, but for the moment it has a devastating effect on the shareprice.
