Good point. In my eyes it comes down to financing... that is, as we're dealing with lines of credit and off-balance-sheet financing a certain measure of commercial appeal is required to get everyone on boat, which really can only mean some degree of past box office success (which in turn means stars, or at least familiar names). Releasing "good" movies is a luxury that I think is appealing, but as a public company and the scrutiny this brings I think it's also hard to do -- kind of the straight and narrow path, and so some wavering off that ideal is not exactly surprising. That this whole company is a rather organic process and not a linear model has become quite clear over time.
