It may, and I say may, reduce the need for bromine compounds, but I doubt it will eliminate the need. I suspect bromine compunds are used for more than reasons than just as a biocide.

"The bromides of calcium, sodium, and zinc account for a sizable part of the bromine market. These salts form dense solutions in water that are used as drilling fluids sometimes called clear brine fluids" from Wiki.
