All depends on whether or not those puts were sold or bought. Or, it all depends on whether or not those puts are being used as a hedge on a long position. Basically, unless you're the trader who put on the position, you're the only one who really knows what's going o.n ....strategy wise.


Otherwise it's all a guess. If a large put position is initiated on the bid, it's likely that the puts are short ie, the trader expects the stock to move higher. If the puts are bought on the offer, it's either a hedge on a long position or the trader thinks it's going lower.

There's better chance of really seeing what is happening when a trader puts on a straddle strategy or spread bc those strategies are easy to identify and have outright bearish or bullish consequences.
