Interestingly, the article also says:

The well, drilled in 1655 metres of water, reached a total depth of 3543 metres below sea level, achieving all of its geological objectives.

Which I read as it being deep enough to reach all the geology they were interested in at that point in this exploratory hole.

(Of course, the fact that the elephant field of oil is two feet deeper and one foot to the left is apparently not of interest to them at this point.)
