volumn and order inflow...wide spreads makes mm easy..bid/offer what you know you can layoff at a profit quickly and low volumn means mm can play a "take it or leave it" game by laying off within the spread..remember, also, they become the market on some days as there is no retail interest..what do you do on a slow sales period? create movement to find that level where participants emerge...mm's can use naked shorting as a "fair and orderly" market making tool...right!!! they operate within the spread using a proprietary quote system which shows the inside bid/asks..that mm that bot on the low this am is offering out and probably is flat (probably was alerted a large buy order was coming)...he called momma and invited her to show and dinner as he has had a good day already...seriously, they hate unexpected news as they can be temporarily overrun with orders against their current position i.e. net long or net short...'tis a bit more complicated but hope this helped.
