Some people who are not gay do not understand how a statement like that is incendiary and bigoted. I'm not gay - but I'm good at putting myself in another's shoes (and it helps to do a little thinking about the issue).

One doesn't need to be black to understand the situation of bias against blacks; one doesn't have to be gay to understand discrimination against gays; and so it goes ...
