#9678 RE: duelittle2 #9668

Nanosolar is an interesting company to watch, because their technology uses less complicated machinery than many other thin films, although there is a question about how low their true costs of materials is when yield considerations are included.

There must be a subsidy reason for them to be moduling-up in Germany, greater than the mere shipping cost savings. That way they get to say "assembled in Germany" which is something of use in other constituencies as well where local content rules may apply (ie. Ontario's FIT program).

CIGS is definitely playing a greater role than before in the solar world. Its costs lie just in between amorphous thin film and crystalline technologies. Its challenges have historically been yield. Right now, makers are pricing it smack in between those two polars so it remains to be seen where it can find its real advantage (aside from being flexible in a variety of other parameters which could lend credence to its use in off-grid or BIPV applications).
