If they worked for employers that provided these exceptional benefits out of their profits, I'd applaud their good fortune and commend their various employers.

However, it doesn't come from profits.

These friends all work for public employers: a state university, a state agency, various school districts. Their enviable benefits and special compensation arrangements are paid for by taxpayers.
