It appears the FDA is very interested in orphan drugs. They recently announced that they are having their fourth FDA orphan drug designation workshop between Feb. 28 - March 1, 2011. They had 3 in 2010.

Good post.

We both could be horribly wrong, but I agree that as far as such things can be labeled a "given," DEPO approval is.

IMHO, you're also spot-on about ABT's rationale for their actions. Their bean counters carefully did the math and determined that under the terms of the existing contract they just would not make enough money. There's no simpler way of putting it.

A small company like Depomed can come up with the greatest drug ever discovered by man, but unless they have the means to market that drug it will not go far.

As I've said before, IMO both parties will hammer-out a new agreement that is not quite as beneficial for DEPO as the old, but is also not "giving away the farm." That should satisfy the ABT bean counters, and we'll all move on from there.
