They recently had an extremely talented designer who left for a different startup in NYC. I know the designer - he actually turned down a job at a company that I advise - and while he was polite about it, you could tell he didn't love his time there. Very little concern about design, which is why the application looks the way it does.
They will have a hard time hiring a truly top-end designer, IMO. It's just not the kind of application that truly talented designers will want to develop - too spammy, too scammy. Designers care about the users, businessmen care about getting sign ups at any cost.
