Basically because either he has the golden goose or he doesn't. I don't think it would be possible for anyone to fail if they actually have a product that they can make for $10 and sell for $90.

Cognitive dissonance certainly comes into play. That's how people come up with 'solutions.' I like the example of Mr. Bordynuik getting caught in one of his lies when he publicly said he is filing a patent, got a year worth of "Why would he file a patent unless he had something truly valuable?" and then placed in the filings that he never even sought patent protection. The solution that resolves the cognitive dissonance: He must have been in the middle filing then suddenly realized that would be better off protecting the catalyst as a trade secret because in our minds there's no possible way that Mr. Bordynuik is a liar.
