This mechanism would allow the BP to off-load the risk of financing the ADHD trial to the private equity partner, in exchange for any eventual profits.

I suppose this is a possibility, but I've never seen it, although I don't have any great knowledge of the field. I just don't see the financing of the ADHD trial as that great a risk. I mean these aren't oncology or cardiovascular trials. My God, CORX actually pulled one of these off by its lonesome...and, successfuly, at that. Doesn't that seem like a millennium ago?
