I agree, I have said for years now that the war on drugs is a waste time, money, and officers. Lets lock up the real criminals; thieves, killers, rapists... .

That is one option, but there is another that I think is preferable. Get serious about it and make it a capital offense to be a distributor of larger quantities of illegal drugs. Second choice would be a mandatory life sentence with no parole. To make a difference in reducing the problem (which I believe is absolutely needed for our society) the penalty has to be certain, swift, and worse than the potential financial reward.

By the way, I believe that is the underlying problem in our criminal justice system. If you want to stop crime, make the punishment in all cases swift, severe, and certain.

And prisons need to be very unpleasant places to be rather than the country clubs many have now become.
