DARBES, market demand for A64 is shifting quickly to S939, then there´s the 90nm transition etc.
It definitely highlights once again the very dissapointing AMD support from HP in the US: They keep selling Athlon XP (to be phased out this quarter, nevertheless it´s still the majority of HP´s offerings) and S754 AGP platforms (gone soon for Athlon 64) - and no up to date platforms at all (I´ve complained about that for a very long time). The end result is that what you can buy in retail stores in the US today , in terms of AMD desktop systems, is mostly low-end, outdated and soon obsolete technology. I remember a time when HP pushed innovation on the AMD platform. It´s been a (long) while, and sales in that segment can only reflect that. Now, it wouldn´t matter that much if other OEMs had stepped in, like Sony or Gateway. But...you know how that went.
For comparison, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP, Acer and now also smaller OEMs are offering a very comprehensive range of PCIe-based S939 Athlon 64 systems ranging from 3000+ to 4000+ systems in German retail, powered by Nforce4 and Ati RX480, and they are just as successful as the obvious attractiveness of such configurations would suggest, and have by far the best price/performance in the market.
