#53617 RE: chipdesigner #53606

Re: Marty Seyer, a vice president of AMD's microprocessor unit, said Turion will be based on a new transistor structure that will bring power savings and other benefits.

So let's say that AMD made the decision to staff a different layout team for Turion and descendents. I'm willing to explore that, as well. The Hotchips presentation, though, is still filled with power features that aren't necessarily exclusive to Turion. The only thing it discusses is that mobile designs need a larger voltage spectrum and possibly a more aggressive removal of low Vt transistors. The title of the presentation is "Low Power Athlon 64 and Opteron Processors," so you would have to assume that many of the discussed features will be going into Athlon 64 and Opteron.

So what's the possible benefit of a different layout for Turion? What is AMD likely to gain that justifies the greater costs of new and future layout teams? Are you willing to get over your ego for long enough to discuss the consequences?
