"Why is all of this stuff supposedly happening?" It's part of God's plan for humankind. The explanation is rather lengthy, involving the Garden of Eden, sin, redemption, the Jews and the Gentiles, Jesus Christ, good and evil, etc., etc.. Books have been written in the attempt to decipher what is going on in truth from the Divine perspective.
I can't really pinpoint very specifically when these things are going to occur, but we have been given signs that indicate when the last days will be. Many believe that Israel coming back together as a nation is one sign. Israel will sign a peace treaty with 666 which marks the beginning of the last 7 year period of time (known as The Great Tribulation), culminating in the climactic battle of Armageddon, the return of Jesus Christ, and the commencement of a millenium (1,000 years) of peace on earth. Obviously, Israel could not sign a peace treaty with 666 if she were not a nation.
I'm rather sure that the Jewish temple must be rebuilt before all these things are accomplished. I'm rather sure that 666 is going to take up abode in the Jewish temple proclaiming himself to be God.
Revelation 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
The second beast to come up is known as the false prophet. 666 is going to recover from a deadly head wound.
Many believe that the mark of the beast is going to be a computer chip implanted into the forehead or the palm of the right hand. Transactions will be credited or debited in one's bank account held in universal supercomputers. No man will be able to buy or sell except he "had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." Obviously, this technological capability has not existed until modern times.
"And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak..." This sounds like a robot with artificial intelligence that researchers are now working on.
666 is one bad dude -- Rev. 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
Daniel 7:23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
Although it is not very clear at this time where we are on the timeline of these events, it will become much clearer as these days approach and are in fact upon us. Acts 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
