I agree that it will be a long time before discovery of this gene translates into any products on the market or even in clinical trials. (Although perhaps it's another potential RNAi candidate.)

However, it may actually benefit companies currently working on AMD drugs. It will be much faster to develop a test for the gene than to develop a new class of drug.

If people with a family history of AMD know they have the gene, they will be much more likely to get checked on a regular basis for AMD, which could lead to earlier and more successful treatment. This should "grow the market" for current AMD drugs.

I for one would like to be tested, as I've had close relatives suffer from AMD.
