Ot, Everclear...
Aimster I remember Everclear....
I remember having some at a party when I was 18 or 19. It was very effective. They used to make a drink out of it called Purple Passion it was Everclear and Grape juice....

Looking on the web I see they actually sell a concoction by that very name!

<OT> Uses for EverClear..........

We were at dinner at a friend's house one evening some years back. It's a "mixed marriage" in that Dave is U.S. born and Antoinette is Italian born. As a treat after dinner, Dave said,"Antoinette, you know that bottle you keep in the freezer? Why don't you get it out and we'll have some with dessert?"

Antoinette returned with a bottle of home made "Limonchello" a traditional Italian beverage made by many familes.

I'd first had Limonchello in 1995 when I was in Italy for my brother's wake. He'd died there on vacation when run down by a truck driver. Several of his friends there locally (they'd vacationed in the same town for many years) brought limonchello for the dinner and party (sort of an Italian version of an Irish Wake). I was quite taken by the beverage, but hadn't thought about it again.

Sampling Antoinette's reminded me of my first time trying this delicious citrus beverage. I asked her where she bought it. She said, "My sister was visiting and we went looking for limonchello at several places. Finally we found some, but were very dissapointed in it. So, we called my mom and she gave me the recipe. So my sister and I went out and got the ingredients and made it ourselves. It's just like momma's."

I asked if I could have a copy of how to make it and she got out the recipe. However, it was written in Italian! So, before we had too many Limonchellos, she was kind enough to translate it. It used EverClear as the basic ingredient. However, by the time the beverage is completed, the Proof is diluted to about 60 (about 1/3 Everclear to 2/3 water). Think of lemonade with a mule's kick!!! Smooth enough to be kind to the palate, sweet and can be served a variety of ways.

I've made it and shared it with people all over the place from "Felkincrest" to Aruba to Martha's Vineyard and back to Wisconsin. It is always a hit. However, I no longer search out EverClear as it is sometimes difficult to find unless near a college campus! Instead I use 80 Proof triple distilled vodka as the starting point and end up diluting it to about 60 Proof. It takes the vodka a bit longer to extract the lemon oil from the zest, but I never hurry such things.

If anyone would like my recipe, I'd be happy to share it. I have consumed Limonchello chilled as a sipper, mixed with tonic is a great summer time beverage and a friend of mine likes it with Coca Cola. I've also served it over vanilla ice cream.

Now back to business........
