They really look for the quals and then someone who presents well and is able to think on their feet. A lot of upfront interviewing goes on prior to final selection for a lot of the experts. Once they find a good one, they usually keep him/her around as firms typically engage in the same kind of work. A good expert commands some serious money as well. They are usually involved in high dollar cases for the most part.
