It was really weird. Needless to say, he'd never seen a sheep in his life. Apparently some herding dogs have herding instincts, and others don't.

He did have all the moves, in his own way. Another time, a (repulsive) friend of my boyfriend's invited us up to his ski house in Vermont for the weekend. The guy's name was David. My boyfriend's name was Charles, just to make the narrative clear.

David drove Charles and me and Piggy up in what was, back in 1978, a primitive SUV. We were meeting our friends Alison and François at the house. So we all got there late Friday afternoon. Alison (a grad school classmate) had been in Maine to visit her father, and had brought us all lobster for dinner.

We guests were, suitably enough, lodged in the guest wing. At cocktail time, David came down. As I said, he was obnoxious. He insisted on telling us how much everything had cost, and didn't seem to realize that we weren't impressed. Worse, he kept trying to "make friends" with Piggy. Piggy liked most people but he wanted to approach them on his own terms. I explained that to David, but as noted, he was an asshole. He thought he was "good with dogs".

Eventually we finished our dinner, and our wine, and David went away to his own quarters.

As I've said, I'm not an early riser, so I missed the next morning's fun. Evidently David was showing Charles his garden. He bent over to point out a prize specimen when Piggy charged up and bit him on the ass.

Well... That IS what sheepdogs do when the sheep displease them.
