People do it all the time for a variety of reasons. They have a large holding, and trade small amounts to influence. I don't believe in MM signals.

not if you have a bank of america /merrill account you can trade for free only 25 trades per month

I maxed out the yearly contribution to my ROTH IRA and I'm on free trades for 60 days with my new account so the other day I was signaling the market makers to gap up PCFG with a 500 share ask slap several times. It was very fun even though I doubt it had any effect. ;-)

What followed was a 99500 buy. The 500 you saw was a partial fill of 100k. Tells me that they are low on shares..
