it's not so much giving the government the power to force anybody to do anything so much as it is the only action that will make people think of the price of war in a very real manner.

Nothing else will work.

When the draft notices increased to 400,000 in 1966, that was quickly followed by massive protest and the 1967 draft card burnings. if you read Nixon's autobiography, you will see that it was precisely the level of protest to the war that caused him to exit before he wanted to. Had it not been for the protests, we'd likely still be in Vietnam and it is the lack of protest that have created a situation in which we're in Afghanistan for 10 years with no end in sight.

the War created the Draft. the draft caused the protest. the protests ended the war.

it makes a difference.
