Volume doesn't necessarily matter to make the run itself happen, but if you want to avoid an equally powerful pullback it's nice to have solid volume on the way up.
I've seen low volume runs too. Happens when a lot of accumulation occurs at low prices, which is what happened here over the past week or so.
