I think Intel's platform story is a hardware + software + infrastructure equation, all of which Intel is pretty good at. I'm thinking along the lines of system management, serviceability features, virtualization, security, etc. Many of these initiatives will benefit from being done in-house with a close-knit team, as opposed to collaboration with a 3rd party. Intel is reinventing themselves as a platform company, and AMD can only go so far with industry enabled initiatives.
