It's the nature of revolution vs evolution.

I read some of the one star reviews. A good number of them were from people who react strongly to revolutionary devices. A certain number of them will not embrace a revolutionary device's features and limitations, instead insisting on continuing with status quo features and limitations.

There were some early problems with the wi-fi when it was released. They have since been fixed, but the resulting low rating reports are still part of the feedback data.

There's a certain amount of AT&T backlash and complaints about the data plan.

And the fact that the iPad competes with Amazon's own line of products, and that Amazon owns the the site where you are seeing the ratings.
