so, see I have this figured correctly -

1 - LordGod sends a prophet out to preach "Let us follow other gods" and then says -
you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul

2 - If you (and/or other town folks) fail the test and say "Let us go and worship other gods" -- you and all that made the mistake are to be killed by stoning, if a small number -- or by the sword and fire, if a large number.

sounds tricky, very tricky
