What? Barnett fires his lawyer so he doesn't have to pay him? Tomorrow, I am firing all of my lawyers.

This is called a contract and the "oil business" doesn't change contract law.

Why would Barnett fire him but to keep from paying him? It looks like the lawsuit and the work Nathan did made this case for the former OMDA.
