But they alone are not the inhibiting factor that has created a challenge for faster PWC adoption. Last time I spoke with somone in the know, there were in excess of 70 different reader apps out there worldwide. That said, a "Universal Reader" has to work on various OS languages, e.g. Symbian, MSFT 5.0, RIMM, Palm, Java, Lynx, etc. and be able to decipher both 1d UPC and EAN as well as open source 2d DataMatrix, QR, Aztec, etc. codes. This does not include a camera phone software app being able to decipher proprietray codes such as ShotCode, J-Tag, MSFT-Tag, EZCode, etc. which complicate the adoption of this space even further, irrespective of the GSMA/OMA, GS-1 and CTIA standards bodies promotion of open source codes. NeuStar has an exceptional approach in being able to act as a terminal whereby all 1d and 2d open source codes will be accessed by different reader types and OS languages.
