The reality is that many, many films use CGI at one point or another during the movie. I've figured this out by determining and asking myself; "Would that scene cost hundreds or thousands or millions to recreate?" The the answer is its CGI more than likely. So like Engineer just showed, CGI can be everything from life-like cartoons up to close-up shots and you may never know the difference. You would probably have to do CGI work daily to pick out every little nuance that IS or IS NOT CGI. The way I see it, is its cost prohibitive to NOT go CGI nowadays. imo.
