Beowulf also used a slightly different technology called motion capture. A few films have used this technology lately, including "A Christmas Carol" from Disney. I would say a motion capture film and CGI animated film would not necessarily look the same. If you compared "Beowulf" to "Toy Story 3" you would see a noticeable difference in how they look.
