On the downside, you're not protected from the worst kinds of malware. Microsoft's security team is not a P&L center, so it's not funded as well as McAfee's, which is going to affect the quality of the product.
Of course, you won't care until you get a virus or piece of malware that trashes your system. Then Microsoft will be your worst enemy, and whoever saves you will be your best friend.
