That is short sale trade data not FTD data, you need to understand how Market Makers work. They are like casino operators, they make there money regardless because they have a house edge.

Example: Customer A places an order through Market Maker B for 100 shares, market maker B does not have shares but locates them and has an agreed seller. Market Maker sells said shares and covers the following day with located shares. This scenario has therefore created short sale data out of a long share transaction.
