Bliss, I must disagree. MSFT has a greater tendency to drop after earnings and upside is limited in the days following an announcement that does not disappoint. Specifically, look at 7/18 '03, 10/23 '03, 1/23 '04 (although it didn't drop immediately - it went up for a day before dropping for several) and 5/5 '04. On all other earnings announcements in the last 2 years, there wasn't much move to the upside in the days immediately following the announcement. Therefore, IMO, the greater risk is to the downside.

Not exactly 'gapping and running' but resisting QQQQ 37 so far... They say "never short a dull market", methinks a midday drop in anticipation of the elections will be bought into the close, much like the Nikkei's action.
