There are uncovered short positions out there. How many? Unknown, but the maximum out there would be the total short volume that Dannol posts every day, going all the way back to 07/08/2010.
Keep in mind that the short volume is the total shorted AND covered shares for the day, so it's not necessarily all naked short volume.
It makes me wonder who bid whacked that rally at 3:59 pm for 50k shares the other day.
Any significant news today could have this open short position add fuel to the run up.
In all likelihood, this will be a non-event like it was back in April, but it helps to explain the irregular upward movement. I also think it points to a strong desire to hold this stock price down at the moment. If 2Q is uneventful, this validates the short position and they'll cover lower, which means more and more whining for another 90 days...
However, it is a gamble if they let this open into an earnings report...
