JMO, but a 308 would be just enough without being too much. I'm seriously think of getting an AR for the first time, but I think I'll go with chambered in 308. However, there is a lot of talk and most all of positive about the:

I've bewen looking at the Rock River Arms AR in 6,8.

I have been considering a similar move. Here's is what I think I have settled on. A Russian made, American modified Saiga in 5.45 x 39...in other words an AK 74. The ammo has about the same ballistics as the .556 American round. The cost is about 1/3 of the .556 or 223 round. An Arsenal AK 74 Russian Rifle SGL31-61 (available through Atlantic Arms among others) is what I am referring to. No direct gas impingment problems like the AR, much simpler take down than the AR, higher reliability than the AR, much cheaper ammo than the AR, very accurate rifles. Oh yeah, and they will really rankle any AR owners/fans when you show up at the range with one (I am SO going to get clobbered for expressing this opinion! LOL). GLTU!
