#580 RE: Elmer Phud #579

Elmer, here is key to Magee's article

At Computex we spoke to several motherboard and system makers who were also unhappy about being given insufficient information to build products based on AMD technology. These were mostly server and notebook manufacturers - building and validating these types of systems is far different from working on desktops. Customers need positive re-assurance that server systems and notebooks are going to be steady as a rock. Particularly for server systems, AMD has everything to prove, and if it wants design wins, has to supply the builders of such systems with detailed information about thermal, chassis and other data well ahead of time. June wasn't too early for the server firms at Computex we talked to - validating these kinds of systems takes a long, long time.

AMD's expertise has always been in low cost desktop chips. With Athlon, they were able to break into the premium markets, but eventually, Athlon was cast back down to the value markets. Recently, though, AMD has tried to pioneer into server and mobile markets with designs that they just can't follow through on. Like Magee said, AMD is trying to go head to head with Intel in all market segments, and as a result, they are spreading themselves too thin in all segments.

It was really a well written article, and something I'd hope to see more from Magee. Of course, I fully expect it to also incur the rage of the AMD Zealot community. But I think Magee has always been ok with criticism. :-)
