I think you are correct, and that I may have implied more nefarious intention than actually exists. However, even if all of the short positions are solely due to MM's borrowing shares from each other, there will still be downward price pressure due to their desire to cover at a lower price.

PS...Going back a few days, shorts accounted for 40% or so of the daily trades and yesterday was 51%.
