Market makers are indeed important so that when you want to buy, you can buy, and vice versa. They take the other side of your trade when a market gets one-sided.
However, it is important to understand that they don't do this out of the goodness of their hearts. By providing liquidity on both sides of the market, they not only make the spread, but they also make money off of people who are in a real hurry to buy or sell and are thus willing to give up a little bit on price for certainty and speed of execution. It's a pretty consistent living, they just have to put up with the occasional scare when they are the ONLY ones taking the other side. But they play a short-term game, and usually they win.
