I have Scottrade too. You can actually buy stock with unsettled funds, but you just can't sell that new stock until the sale from the old one is settled. They give you a warning that if you do sell, your account will be placed on a 90 day restriction. Worth the risk if you have a sure thing, but when do you really ever have a sure thing?

My philosophy with trading is that it isn't here to make me rich. I just want an extra stream of income. It keeps me from zoning in on some far off price that will make me loads (like .01 with EKWX). With pinkes, I sell when I hit 10 - 20%. Because it routinely happens. If it goes above, I don't care. If after a year, I've supplemented my income by 10 - 20% or more, I'm better off for it. Don't care about 1000% gains, although they happen and it's awesome.
